Stunning Rococo Style Fireplace Mantel
We are delighted to offer this incredible and profusely carved French Louis XV style fireplace surround in stunning Bois Jourdan marble.
This well proportioned, heavily decorated mantel is made by a true master carver.
The extremely protruding moulded shelf rest above a richly carved paneled frieze centered by a extremely deep carved foliate cartouche with floraled branches to either side.
Flanked by extremely decorative and generous ‘C’ scrolled end blocks above scrolled angled, acanthus clad jambs. Both foot blocks are adorned with little intertwining floral masterpieces.
All this is executed in Bois Jourdan marble, this is a crystalline marble with a soft grey background ranging from dark blackish grey to almost white. The veining in this marble is unique, the strong red almost fake like veins really makes this stand out.
The Bois Jourdan quarry is still active today and can be found in Grez-en-Bouère, in Mayenne.
Bois Jourdan was very popular in the 19th and 20th century, it is known worldwide for its large decorative and chromatic qualities.
It can be found in the New York Theatre, Trianon and the Sacré-Coeur.
